Identifying the Spine Pain Problems

Many people who suffer from back pain are actually suffering from a very specific injury or illness that is leading to the pain. Identifying the problem why you are experiencing pain is the first step in getting the treatment that will really make a difference in your life.

There are 4 common contributing conditions to back pain, and more than likely, you will fall into one of those categories. Those contributing conditions include injury, aging, heredity or tumors/infection. There are also other major contributors to back pain, including the following:

Herniated disc - The intervertebral discs work as a shock absorber, allowing the vertebrae to move independently of each other. When the disc is damaged, it may bulge and rest against a nerve.

Arthritis - There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, including some that are likely to affect the spine. Arthritis is a degenerative condition and it can either occur as a result of wear and tear or it may be an autoimmune disorder.

Spinal Stenosis - This issue occurs due to a narrowing of the bone channel that can place pressure on the spinal cord. It may be due to a congenital disorder or a can be a degenerative problem.

Spinal Fractures - a vertebral fracture is a relatively common problem. It is estimated that women have a 16% the lifetime risk of experiencing such a fracture, and men have a 5% risk. It can lead to back pain, deformity, immobility and they can even affect your pulmonary function.

At times, a nonsurgical procedure may be the best option for spine pain. Those may include an epidural steroid injection, or other type of injection. The primary purpose for these injections is to reduce inflammation and pain. There used to inject a medication at the site where the pain originates. Typically, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug is used for that purpose.

Other types of treatments may involve medication, either with or without physical therapy. This is done on an individual basis, and it is not always the best course of action for everybody who is experiencing spine pain.

Although nonsurgical options are considered for spine pain, there may also be times when a surgical is necessary. A minimally invasive procedure is often the best course of action if surgery is required. Since it is minimally invasive, the recovery time is less likely and there are fewer problems that are associated with it, including the possibility for infections.
