Scoliosis Procedures Frisco TX

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that is abnormal. You may be able to recognize this abnormality when looking at your child in viewing their spine, as there may be abnormal curves that are evident.

How We Approach Repairing Scoliosis

Most cases of scoliosis are treated with open back surgery. At The Neuro & Spine Wellness Center, we take care to make sure that the minimally invasive surgery helps to correct the problem. We use our state-of-the-art x-ray machine and mapping techniques to pinpoint exactly where the curvature exists in the spine that is causing the difficulty. The incisions that are used will be very small, typically between 12 and 15 mm. In many cases, we will be able to avoid the need for open back surgery by inserting the screws from the outside. It is also noteworthy that, due to the fact that we do not use expandable retractors, we will not be cutting into the muscle so the recovery time will be minimal.

Defining scoliosis

Scoliosis
The spine is a very intricate part of the human body. If you look at it from the side, it forms an elongated S with the lower back curving slightly inward and the upper back bowing outward. If you look at it from behind, however, it should appear as if it is a straight line from top to bottom.

When you suffer from the condition known as scoliosis, there is an abnormal curvature of the spine. You may be able to see this with your eye, as it will appear to be abnormal curves when looking at your child's back.

Although it is not fully known why people have scoliosis, it is known to be genetically tied and girls tend to have scoliosis more frequently than boys. Adult scoliosis may also be a problem but this is typically an increase in the problem that began when you were a child and went undiagnosed. There are also certain degenerative joint conditions that can occur with the spine that may result in a problem with scoliosis.

Symptoms

  • Uneven waist
  • One hip seems to be higher than the other hip
  • Fatigue
  • Abnormal leaning in one direction to the side
  • Prominent shoulder blade
  • Uneven shoulders

One other problem that may occur with scoliosis is the twisting or rotating of the spine if it gets worse. This is in addition to the curving that occurs from side to side. This may lead to other problems, including the ribs sticking out further on one side of the body or the other. Severe cases of scoliosis can lead to difficulties with breathing and back pain.
